AYURVEDIC FORMULATIONS – A brief summary
Medicinal formulations are the multistep processes where an active drug is mixed with various other components that are considered necessary for one or the other functionalities like binding, enhancing the action of the active drug, suppressing the potential hazards of the drug, facilitate drug delivery, etc. This is true in case of Ayurveda too. Here the different formulations are done in various dosage forms like tablets, linctus, syrups, fermented liquids, etc. These can be classified into two major types namely Classical and Proprietary ones. The classical ones are those which are mentioned in various texts that are attributed to the science of Ayurveda. These texts are those which were written by many distinguished scholars who have prepared and practiced during their time period. But legally, the classical formulations are considered to be those which have a reference in any of the text that is mentioned in the Schedule 1 list of Drug and cosmetic Act. The rest of the formulations are considered as proprietary ones.
The formulations can be also classified as those which help in improving or maintaining the quality of health or life. These are categorised as the ‘Rasayana’ (रसायन) or ‘Vajikarana’ (वाजीकरण) formulations while the rest are known for a specific cures or activities. Even based on the ingredient these can be single or multiple ingredient formulations. The formulations that are categorised for improving or maintaining the health of the individual is a unique contribution of Ayurvedic medicinal science that is mainly used in the healthy individuals. But these formulations are also used in the improvement of health that had deteriorated due to some disease condition. Here the formulation becomes specific to the condition involved.
