AYURVEDA EXPLANATION
As per the definition, the substance that which helps in the and acts favorable to Bala is known as Balya. But to understand the action, it is important to know what is Bala on which the action is basically effective. On a general sense, the word Bala denotes body or physical strength. In Ayurveda, this word represents different component of the body in different contexts namely, Satva Bala, Vyadhibala, Sahaja Bala,Kalajabala and Yuktikrita Bala. It is also to be noted that the word also the synonym of Kapha Dosha and Ojus. These different terminologies is making it all the more complex to understand. But when we analyse in totality, all the contexts can be divided into three groups of components namely Protective Component, Nourishing Component and Life promoting Component.
The Protective component consists of the Immunological components of the body which are three types namely Sahaja, Kalaja and Yuktikrita. Under the category of Yuktikrita, the use of medicaments, food and lifestyle is aimed to increase the immunity response with immunomodulators. Here this is one aspect of Balya action.
The Nourishing component consists of all the aspects that help in nourishes the body tissues provide strength and stamina to the body. It is also one that is useful in maintenance of the body bulk and has a considerable nourishing effect on mind thus resulting in increase of Satva Bala. Now the use of medicaments, food and lifestyle which is aimed to increase the bulk, stamina and strength of the body tissues along with confidence and courage to mind is possible with bulk promoters, nutritional supplements, tonics, etc of similar category. Here this forms the another dimension of Balya action.
Lastly the Life promoting component consists of those aspects that are vital and is very much necessary for our existence. Protection, stability and maintenance of these components are very much necessary for us to exist. The components that are to be considered here are Kapha (in its normal hemostatic condition) and Ojus. This is usually taken care by the use of substances that are again considered to be as Nutritional supplements, immunomodulators and tonics like cardiotonic, hematinics, and even restoratives.
But overall a particular substance or a situation which include food, medicine or Lifestyle when it is to be considered as the one that produces Balya action, it has to produce a favorable activity and related effect on any of these or all of these components. Based on this understanding, the properties that is necessary for the said action is MADHURA RASA, MADHURA VIPAKA, GURU, SNIGDHA AND SHEETA VEERYA as these properties are favorable with majority of the components of the body thereby providing protection, stability and development of body tissues.
MODERN EXPLANATION
Among various pharmacological action, we can consider three as equivalents to the activity of BALYA are Immunomodulators, Nutritional supplements, Bulk promoters and Restoratives. All the four have a different pattern of action which explains the complexity of the Pharmacological action mentioned in Ayurveda. The IMMUNOMODULATORS are those class of substances or lifestyles that are helpful in the modulation or adjustment of the immune system and result in increase of decrease of the response as required to effectively combat the threats arised from various internal and external stimuli. Here the ability to bring out the correct response to a stimulus is enhanced by the intake of the food, medicine and lifestyle.
The NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS are the group of food or medicine which supplement the component of the body that are deficient and also do have those components that are necessary for further development and stability of the body. They are also known as Dietary supplements and allowed to consume in sufficient quantities so as to fulfil the nutritional requirements of the body.
BULK PROMOTERS are those activities, food and medications that increase the bulk of the body. It is also known as Body building activity. The activity is usually for aesthetic purpose but involves all the dietary, lifestyle and medication to achieve the same.
RESTORATIVES are those class of substances or medicines that aid in restoring health, strength or even consciousness of the individual. But in this case we need to consider the bodily attributes hence strength and health are taken into consideration.
