DEFINITION
ओषघिभिर्निष्पन्नं व्यधिहितं तदुपलक्षणम् । त्वात्सर्व चिकित्सितमौषधं रूढम् ।। (Gangadhar commentary)
Any pharmacological preparation that is beneficial to the user and helps in obtaining the desired effect is known as औषध (Aushadha). The effect may be curing of diseases or enhancement of health in the form of Rasayana or Vajikarana. As the name is very commonly denoting those substances that are used in the purpose of treatment, it is usually considered to be synonymous to चिकित्स (Chikitsa) or treatment.
IMPORTANCE OF AYURVEDIC FORMULATIONS
देशकालमुण्येन संगृहीतं यथा विधिः । स्थापितं भेषजं तैस्तैः कल्पनैरमृतायते ।। (Bheshaja Kalpa 1st Chapter, 2nd Sloka)
औषधं चापि दुर्युक्तं तीक्ष्णं सम्पद्येते विषम् । विषं च विधिना युक्तं भैषज्यायोपकल्पते ।। (Kashyapa Samhita)
A medicine is prepared from various ingredients that are collected with due consideration to different factors pertaining to collection, storage and also condition of the material. Such ingredients are used for the preparation of various formulations that are done by use of various processes according to the dosage form of the formulation.
The processes that are performed are useful in improvisation of the various ingredients that are present in the formulation such that even the most poisonous are converted to be very beneficial. But it is always to be noted that any substance when abused will lead to harmful effects that may be equal to poisons.
