Vijaya is a plant that most of us have never heard off till date even though it is very popularly used in many formulations of Ayurveda. The plant though is not known by this name, it is still has a great popularity both in white and black markets of the world. This is one among the drugs that are classified under the Narcotics along with Ahiphena. If you can guess it, then fine else this plant is popularly known as Bhang which is popularly known around world as Cannabis. Today, this has assumed a greater importance as its potential to address the different ailments is being researched and proved. The botanical name of this plant is Cannabis sativa L which is very popular to be known as Weed, Hemp, Bhang, etc. The plant belongs to the family Cannabaceae and is commonly referred to as Vijaya in the Ayurvedic texts. This plant is banned for normal use but can be used for medicinal purposes in different countries including INDIA. The word ‘Cannabis‘ is basically derived from the Greek word ‘Kannabis’ which was the name given to ‘hemp’ while the word ‘sativa‘ means that which is cultivated or sown or planted which is an english word derived from the Latin word ‘Sativus’.
