IMMUNITY IN AYURVEDA

Immunity or Vyadhikshamatva as told in Ayurveda is one of the important concept that is being of wider interest today. Basically, immunity is the ability of the body to resist any infection or allergen or toxin by the help of specific cells like WBC or components of the body like antibodies. This concept is not new as it had been mentioned in the science of Ayurveda long ago. 

This is termed as ‘VYADHIKSHAMATVA’ in Ayurveda which literally means the ability of the body to tolerate the disease or its related conditions. Infact, in Ayurveda, there is a detailed description of this concept. The concept emphasizes on two major methods of resistance namely the Specific resistance and the General resistance. The both are denoted by the term Vyadhibala virodhitwa and Vyadhi utpadaka pratibhandaktva respectively. The specific resistance is stands for the ability to fight against a particular disease or its cause while the general refers to the ability to fight against any disease or cause. 

Based on the functionality, immunity can be resulted due to internal and external factors where the various components of the body are included. Among the two the external factors that influence immunity can be modified with medication and modification of lifestyle. 

In Ayurveda, the two branches namely the Rasayana and Vajeekarana are basically used for the fortification and maintenance of health. There are many formulations and advices for the achievement of health. It is to be observed that not only medicine but even following virtuous life with good manners and concepts will boost immunity as per Ayurveda.
